We all know that February has long been a month of romance when candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones. However, the true history of Valentine’s Day — and the saint for whom the day is named –is surrounded with legends and remains a mystery.
The questions are still pondered: Who was this mysterious saint, and why do we celebrate this holiday?
One story suggests that the good Saint Valentine was a Roman priest who served under the Roman Emperor Claudius II in the third century. One of Valentine’s activities was to marry couples.
